Translating the Screen:
Challenges and Synergies Between Film and Translation Studies
This Translation Café session presents a collaborative project developed between students of the MA in Translation Studies and students of Film Studies at the University of Galway. The initiative focuses on the translation and subtitling into different languages of short films produced by students from the Huston School of Film and Digital Media. The project adopted a technology-supported pipeline that introduced translation students to key tools and processes of current audiovisual translation practices, incorporating automatic speech recognition software, machine translation and post-editing in the workflow.
The session will use this collaboration as a starting point to discuss the linguistic, cultural, and technical challenges encountered when translating and subtitling audiovisual content. The discussion will also address the affordances and pitfalls of using translation technologies in this context, as well as the post-editing decisions required to produce effective subtitles. More broadly, the conversation will explore the synergies between creative production and translation practice when adapting audiovisual works for multilingual audiences.
