An 800-year-long Meeting: Translating at a ‘General Chapter’

For over 800 years, members of the Order of Preachers (Dominican Friars) have been hosting international meetings called ‘General Chapters’. These meetings have been the occasion of fascinating intercultural and interlingual encounters, and this is still true today. In this presentation Conor McDonough OP, a PhD researcher in the Department of Classics (University of Galway), will share his experiences as part of the team of amateur interpreters at the last General Chapter in Krakow. Come along and find out how linguistic bloopers led to blasphemy, how ‘hot mics’ got friars in trouble, and why ‘gamification’ became the most discussed word of the Chapter…
