Our final Translation Café for 2024 will be dedicated to one of the most fascinating translators that Galway has ever produced, and the person after whom our Centre for Translation Research and Practice is named.
Emily Anderson OBE was appointed as the first Professor of German at University College Galway in 1917, and is internationally acclaimed as the translator of the Letters of Mozart and his Family (1938) and the Letters of Beethoven (1961). Yet after she left academia in 1920, she began a second, secret life, at the highest echelon of British intelligence, for over fifty years. Dr. Jackie Uí Chionna (History Department), will discuss her biography of Anderson, entitled Queen of Codes: The Secret Life of Emily Anderson, Britain’s Greatest Female Codebreaker, which was shortlisted for the Elizabeth Longford Prize for Historical Biography in 2024.
Translation Café is a monthly event run by the Emily Anderson Centre for Translation Research and Practice. It functions as a reading group for colleagues interested in the many facets of the art of translation. The format of the group allows participants to share their interests, research or linguistic investigations with other colleagues in an informal manner.
